What is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?
Biodynamics is founded on the insights and pioneering work of Osteopath William Sutherland (1873-1954). He recognized that the structure of the skull bones are designed for a respiratory-like movement.
This realisation led him to notice that these bones of the cranium (skull) experience a very subtle rhythmic motion. He also observed how cerebrospinal fluid, the transparent bodily fluid that encases the brain and spinal cord, has its own pulse or cranio-rhythmic impulse (CRI), and the expression of this fluid's rhythmic motion is crucial for maintaining our health.
From his initial focus on the cranial bones and this rhythmic impulse, Sutherland quickly realized that the rhythmic motion is a characteristic of all the body's tissues and fluids. He called this rhythmic motion or mechanism within the body, Primary Respiration.

This movement, when freely and harmoniously expressed, represents a state of optimal health and vitality. A skilled practitioner can engage and attune to this rhythmic motion, thereby identifying any areas of restriction or density. Furthermore, by tuning into this subtle motion, the body's innate healing mechanism works to address these patterns of conditioning, allowing normal function to be restored.
Initially, Sutherland treated his clients using more manual or mechanical methods. However, later in his career, he observed that more profound results could be achieved by working in a more energetic or biodynamic manner.

The body possesses a strong self-healing capacity, which can be supported to help combat the effects of injury, illness, trauma, or stress. Unresolved stressful or traumatic events may remain in the body, limiting our natural ability to heal. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy helps create the optimal environment where these challenges can be addressed, allowing the body’s intrinsic drive toward health to be reignited.
"We cannot begin a treatment with a motive. We cannot begin a treatment with a relationship to a lesion. The "getting rid of the lesion attitude" and "feeling the presence of love" are not compatible. Because the goal of the love is not to get rid of the lesion. It's to awaken the whole to its presence so it can make its own response"
